The Seven Sacraments

Sacraments are outward signs of inward grace, instituted by Christ for our sanctification (Catechismus concil. Trident., II, n. 4, ex S. August “De catechizandis rudibus”).

The seven sacraments are divided into: the sacraments of Christian initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist); the sacraments of healing (Penance and Anointing of the Sick);, and the sacraments at the service of communion and mission (Holy Orders and Matrimony). The sacraments touch all the important moments of Christian life. All of the sacraments are ordered to the Holy Eucharist “as to their end” (Saint Thomas Aquinas). (CCC 1210-1211)

Sacraments of Christian Initiation

Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons (and daughters) of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission…” (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1213))

“Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.’” – John 3:5

Confirmation

“Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.” (CCC 1316)

Holy Eucharist

Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; . . . he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and . . . abides in me, and I in him”

– John 6:51, 54, 56

“If Christ did not want to dismiss the Jews without food in the desert for fear that they would collapse on the way, it was to teach us that it is dangerous to try to get to heaven without the Bread of Heaven.”

– St. Jerome

“How many of you say: I should like to see His face, His garments, His shoes. You do see Him, you touch Him, you eat Him. He gives Himself to you, not only that you may see Him, but also to be your food and nourishment.”

– St. John Chrysostom

Sacraments of Healing

Penance (Confession)

“On the evening of that day, the first day of the week…Jesus came and stood int heir midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ And when he said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.'”

– John 20:19-23

Anointing of the Sick

If you are experiencing an illness, injury, impending surgery, or weakness due to age, there is powerful help available for you through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in which the priest prays, lays hands, and anoints the sick person with blessed oil. It may be preceded by the Sacrament of Reconciliation and followed by the Eucharist. The sacrament may be repeated if the recipient suffers from a different illness or injury or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious.

Marriage (Matrimony)

The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life (cf Council of Trent: DS 1799) (CCC 1661).

Holy Orders

“Christ is knocking very hard at many hearts, looking for young people like you to send into the vineyard where an abundant harvest is ready.”

—St. John Paul II

Our diocesan seminary, Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary, periodically offers “Come and See” weekends for men considering priesthood. Likewise, local religious orders provide opportunities for men and women who want to explore their call to religious life. People who are considering becoming a sister, brother, deacon, or priest (either Diocesan or Religious Order) are encouraged to talk with Fr. Steve Angi or Fr. Aaron Hess.
