Confirmation Preparation

GUARDIAN ANGELS • IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY • ST. JOHN FISHER

What is Confirmation

Confirmation is the Sacrament of Initiation that provides the Confirmandi (one preparing for Confirmation) with the gifts and graces necessary to support a life of ongoing Christian discipleship.

Why receive the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Confirmation is the final step into full initiation into the life and mission of the church that was begun at Baptism.

The mission of Christ, passed on to the Church and to each one of us as disciples, is to be witnesses to Christ as the Son of God and our Savior.

Confirmation is also then the “commencement” step into living out our call to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations… (Matthew 28:19).”

We are called to be God’s hands and feet in the world, working with Christ to bring about the Kingdom on Earth. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Holy Spirit equips us more fully with His gifts to build up the Church and, with the fruits of the Holy Spirit, to make us effective disciples. Why Choose the St. Gregory the Great for your Confirmation Preparation?

A Process, Not a Program

Confirmation Preparation at St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes (SGG) is better understood as a conversion process that focuses on the individual’s immediate preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The SGG Difference

A Team Effort and a Tailored Experience

At SGG, we want your child to have the best Confirmation Preparation experience possible and we know that you know your child best. The SGG Confirmation process offers parents and sponsors the freedom to select the enriching opportunities and resources that you recognize are best suited to meet your child’s specific spiritual needs. Our SGG team collaborates closely with parents and sponsors throughout the entirety of the Confirmation process to ensure you and your child are well supported.

Equipping Lifelong Disiples

Our shared goal as a parish, parents, and sponsors is to ensure that each child feels both spiritually ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and well equipped to live out the fullness of their Catholic faith in their everyday lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

The entire process that we have developed is meant to offer support for the family. You are not alone! If you have concerns about your child, please contact Alex Bodenschatz, Coordinator of Youth Evangelization at alexb@sggparish.org

Step 1: DON’T PANIC!

Step 2: Listen to them and encourage them to continue to have honest conversations about their decision. Do not pressure them to receive the Sacrament if they are expressing that they are not ready.

Step 3: Affirm and support their ongoing discernment. Assure them that they may enter Confirmation Preparation when they feel ready. If you need further assistant contact Alex Bodenschatz, Coordinator of Youth Evangelization at alexb@sggparish.org

No, the Sacrament of Confirmation is not implicitly associated with any particular grade level. It is not a graduation, but rather an important step in one’s lifelong discipleship journey. Individuals may be ready for entering into Confirmation Preparation at different ages.

No, they do not. While our Catholic schools do provide ample opportunities for the students to practice their discipleship, they are primarily responsible for covering the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Graded Course of Study for 7th Grade Religion.

The Confirmation Preparation process focuses solely on the immediate formation necessary for one to be properly disposed to receive the graces of the Sacrament. Whereas the 7th grade curriculum is an educational program with a defined structure and criteria, that is designed to develop knowledge and wisdom about our faith.

No. This process is for those who have previously been baptized in the Catholic Church and have received First Holy Communion If your child has not received either of those Sacraments, and/or you would like to begin the journey of entering the Catholic Church, please contact Alex Bodenschatz, Coordinator of Youth Evangelization at alexb@sggparish.org, to learn more about the OCIA process for Teens.

Life is complicated, and we understand that conflicts may arise. If you miss a gathering, you’ll need to schedule a supplemental meeting with Alex Bodenschatz, Coordinator of Youth Evangelization at alexb@sggparish.org
